5 Great Reasons To Retire In Ecuador

by Dan Vasquez

If you're reaching retirement age and looking for ideas on where to purchase property for your golden years, you might be surprised at what you'll find if you think outside the usual box. Instead of looking at the usual spots in Florida or Arizona, you might want to look at Ecuador instead. Following are five reasons why Ecuador might be just the ideal retirement spot for you.

Ecuador Offers Excellent Senior Discounts

You don't have to be a citizen of Ecuador to enjoy its over-65 discount program. You'll be able to ride both public and private transportation at half the normal rate, get a variety of tax breaks depending on income and applicable goods and services, and buy movie tickets as well as attend sporting events, concerts, and other cultural happenings for one-half off the normal price. Other benefits available to those over the age of 65 include receiving half-off your utility bills up to a certain amount of usage and a free landline for local calls.

Ecuador Enjoys Optimal Weather

As its name implies, the country of Ecuador lies right on the Earth's equator. You'll have 12 hours of sunlight every day all year round -- no dark, gloomy winters with short days. Because Ecuador contains mountains, beaches, and rain forests within its borders, however, weather conditions vary by location, so you should be able to find something that suits your individual needs and preferences as far as weather. If you love spring, Ecuador's capital, Quito, is the place for you because the weather is like spring all year round, with balmy, warm days and nights. If traditional tropical weather is more to your liking, you'll probably enjoy living in a beach town such as Salinas or Manta, where temperatures average 85 degrees Fahrenheit. Ecuador even has snow in the high parts of the Andes, if you like to engage in skiing or other snow sports.

Ecuador Enjoys a Large Ex-Pat Community

Moving to a new country can be a stressful experience, but Ecuador's large ex-pat community will help you feel at home. Naturally, you'll want to mingle with Ecuadoran natives when given the opportunity, but if your Spanish is limited, you'll find it reassuring to be able to count on others from the United States to help you acclimate to live in an Ecuadoran city. They can show you the ropes and ensure you're on track to get the most out of your retirement destination -- and you'll probably make some good friends among them as well.

Ecuador Has Excellent Health Care

Low cost medical care is another reason why many people from other countries are retiring in Ecuador. Since 2014, legal residents are eligible for Ecuador's Social Security program, which is roughly the equivalent of Medicare in the U.S. The monthly fee for foreign residents is $65, and if you've got a spouse, that fee for that person will be $12.50. Even if you decide to stick with private insurance, it costs far less than it does in most other parts of the world. The overall quality of health care in Ecuador is very good, and you'll most likely receive more personal attention from your primary health care provider than you would from their counterpart in the U.S.

Ecuador Has Great Food

With seafood providing the base for much of the country's traditional cuisine, Ecuadoran food is generally healthy, fresh, and delicious. The climate is ideal for growing a great variety of tropical fruits and vegetables, and you'll love the abundance of outdoor farmers market-style shopping options. Ecuador is also known for producing exquisite chocolate.  Please call us at your convenience for more information on purchasing international real estate.
